HIV PRE-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)  is an experimental preventive approach whereby oral therapeutic antiretrovirals are taken by seronegative individuals, before anticipated exposure.

About 19 clinical trials have been designed so far. To date, however, there is not enough data to conclude on the safety and efficacy of PrEP.

Although the concept is scientifically interesting and has been successfully used for other health issues, testing it in humans, for HIV, poses some critical methodological and ethical challenges.

It is important for scientists and non-scientists infected or affected by HIV to be aware of the progress of HIV PrEP research. In particular, it is essential to reflect on the behavioral, social and political implications of that research and of the results to come.
